Ellis Island Days (Ready-For-Chapters)
Published in Paperback by Aladdin Library (August, 2002)
Authors: Ellen Weiss and Betina Ogden
Average review score:

A gem of a book!
I saw this and showed it to my 6yo daughter because of the cover - a young girl with the Statue of Liberty in the back. She was captivated and asked me to go back to reading it with her after having to stop for a while. Written in the doll's narrative, it's a very age-appropriate representation of some of the challenges and experiences of the immigrants to Ellis Island. Gently interspersed are themes of family and responsiblity.

Encyclopedia of Sports Culture (Routledge World Reference)
Published in Paperback by Routledge (December, 2002)
Authors: Ellis Cashmore and Ernest Cashmore
Average review score:

One of the best introductory books on sports sociology
When you try to read this book for the first time it looks like a sports dictionary. But when you get closer you see that this book covers a large part of sports culture and it gives to the reader a lot of information on the most serious critiques that have been written for sports. Inside you will find texts covering the "Protestant ethic" of sports, analysis of terms such as "videated" and articles on drugs and the IOC and also the very important works of Norbert Ellias (among others) in summary.

LDAP and authentication.
Finally a good book that shows examples of authentication via LDAP. This has been an area of great confusion. The Enterprise Security Scenarios were helpful also.

Essex Shipbuilding (Images of America: Massachusetts)
Published in Paperback by Arcadia (October, 2002)
Author: Courtney Ellis Peckham
Average review score:

A wonderful blend of facts and photographs
Courtney E. Peckham is the curator of the Essex Shipbuilding Museum and is therefore uniquely qualified to write a text on Essex shipbuilding. The compilation of her research is based on recently donated rare photographs and manuscripts related to shipbuilding in the tiny town of Essex, Massachusetts. Sailors, woodworkers, boatbuilders, historians, and general readers will enjoy both the narrative style of the text and the beautifully reproduced rare photographs. There are several books about Essex shipbuilding, notably by Mr. Dana Story of Essex. Dr. Kenneth Lawson has written a unique history of Essex ships used in US military service. The books by Gordon Thomas also cover ships built in Essex, MA. Ms. Peckham's book brings new information and photos to her readers, updating the research on Essex built vessels. While most of the books on Essex ships are sold primarily in the museum bookstore, this new book by Ms. Peckham should reach a wider audience through Amazon.com. I recommed the book.

Famous Operations

Author: Harold Ellis
Average review score:

Famous Operations
This is a very quick read. The chapters are short. The book is divided into sections: Major innovations, first surgical operations, and famous patients. Mr. Ellis' descriptions are embellished with his own biases and opinions which make the book more enjoyable to read. A must for anyone interested in the history of surgery.

Final Negotiations: A Story of Love, Loss, and Chronic Illness (Health, Society, and Policy)
Published in Paperback by Temple Univ Press (April, 1995)
Author: Carolyn Ellis
Average review score:

Excellent with real honesty and depth!
This book is so insightful and a wonderful description of what it is like to be primary caretaker for one you love. The text is wonderfully written and moves you deeply into the lives of the characters. Ellis does not shy away from honesty, and in doing so helps us all better face the realities of caring for the terminally ill. On the other hand, Ellis still manages to leave us with hope.
